What is the difference? And which one is right for me?
Besides "Can I smoke the shirt?" – “What is the difference between hemp seeds, oil and protein” would have to be the question we get asked the most at Made In Hemp. And is personally one of my favourites to answer, as I get to pull out my trusty food science/nutrition degree – rather than roll my eyes at the humans. Ha!
So let's start at the very beginning - the whole hemp seed.
The whole hemp seed is made up of a fibrous outer shell and a soft kernel which is full of protein and essential fatty acids, as well as iron, zinc and magnesium. Currently in Australia, this sale of this is prohibited as in this form it looks too similar to the seed of marijuana. Therefore we either remove this outer shell, using the latest high tech processing machinery so it can't be propagated - to give us Hulled Hemp Seeds - a nutrient dense tasty kernel. Or the whole seeds are cold pressed to produce delicious nutty - Hemp Seed Oil. After which the "seed cake" or the protein and fibre, is then refined through a mechanical process to produce ground seed. The more shell (fibre) that is removed through this process the higher the protein content will be. This process can be used to produce: Hemp Meal, Hemp Flour or Hemp Protein Powder, from ranges of 15% to 50% protein by weight depending on extent of refinement. At Made In Hemp, we offer a 43% Protein Powder or a 50% Organic Protein Powder.
Made In Hemp's Hulled Hemp Seeds
Hulled Hemp Seeds are an excellent source of both protein and omega's 3, 6 and 9 as well as magnesium, iron and zinc. Unlike other seeds or nuts, hemp does not contain Phytic acid - therefore it does not need to be activated before consumption and because their outer shell is removed - they are even easier for the body to digest.
How to enjoy: Sprinkle on salads, muesli, smoothie bowls, avocado or blitz into creamy hemp milk.
Made In Hemp's Protein Powder
Hemp Protein Powder then becomes concentrated source of protein - offering the complete range of amino acids - both essential and non essential. It is free of trypsin inhibitors making hemp particularly bio-available and easily digested – perfect for those who react to conventional whey or soy protein powders. The iron, magnesium, zinc and folate found in the hemp seed also become more concentrated in the protein powder – plus the insoluble fibre from the other shell can be found in the powder –
How to enjoy: Perfect addition to smoothies, bliss balls, gluten free flour replacement breads and baked goods - perfect in banana bread!
Made In Hemp's Organic Hemp Seed Oil
Our hemp seed oil provides the ideal balanced ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids - making it particularly well utilised by the body. Hemp seed oil has a slight nutty flavour and is quite delicate due to being high in polyunsaturated fat. It should be kept in the fridge once open and should not be heated or used as a frying oil.
How to enjoy: Replace your olive oil with hemp seed oil in salad dressings - dukkah with sourdough, fabulous smoothies - Corn cobs or a bowl of tasty porridge, the possibilities are endless!
Hemp seed is a sustainable food source that boasts many nutritional benefits and can be cultivated without negative environmental impact. Hemp food products are highly versatile, with a delicate nutty flavour - most similar to that of Pine nuts or Walnuts and can be used to boost the nutritional value of many meals.
Hemp is also naturally gluten and lactose free as well as free of sodium, cholesterol and trans fat. All Made In Hemp products are processed on dedicated machinery – to insure that there is no contamination for potential allergens.
Made In Hemp's range includes Hulled Hemp Seeds (Organic and Conventional), Hemp Protein Powder (Organic 50% and Conventional 43%) and Hemp Seed Oil (Organic).
